As a family photographer serving Lindale, Tyler, and the surrounding East Texas areas, I’m here to help you choose outfits that look beautiful on camera and feel like you. Simple, relaxed, and true to your family.
Start with Mom’s Outfit
The easiest way to begin is by choosing mom’s outfit first, because it naturally sets the tone for the entire session. Flowy dresses, soft textures like linen or cotton, and neutral or earthy tones tend to photograph beautifully. Once her outfit is decided, it becomes much simpler to coordinate everyone else around it.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Instead of matching outfits, focus on coordinating colors and styles. Choosing a palette of about three colors helps everything feel cohesive without looking too uniform. Mixing tones and textures adds interest. Soft combinations like creams and greens, denim and whites, or warm fall tones like rust and mustard work especially well and photograph in a natural, timeless way.
Dress for the Location
What you wear should complement where your session takes place. For outdoor sessions in open fields or nature, soft colors, flowy fabrics, and neutral shoes (or even barefoot) create a relaxed, organic feel. For downtown or more urban settings, slightly more structured outfits, layers, and clean colors tend to work best. When your outfits match your environment, everything comes together in a way that feels effortless and cohesive.
Think About Light + Season
East Texas light is warm and golden, especially during sunset sessions, so choosing colors that work with that glow makes a big difference. In spring and summer, light neutrals, pastels, and breathable fabrics feel fresh and natural. In the fall, warmer tones like rust, olive, and mustard paired with layers add depth and coziness. It’s also helpful to avoid neon colors, busy patterns, or large logos, since those can distract from the overall look and even reflect onto skin.
Add Texture + Layers
Adding texture and layers is a simple way to elevate your photos without making outfits feel complicated. Pieces like cardigans, knit sweaters, dresses with movement, or layered button-ups add visual interest and depth. These small details help create a more dynamic look on camera while still keeping everything soft and natural.
Details
The little details can make a big difference in your final images. Neutral shoes (or going barefoot for outdoor sessions), minimal accessories, clean nails, and naturally styled hair all help pull the look together. These subtle touches don’t overpower the photo, but they do elevate the overall feel and make everything look more polished.
When in Doubt, Keep It Simple
If you ever feel unsure about what to wear, simplicity is always the best choice. Sticking with neutral colors, soft tones, and minimal patterns creates a timeless look that photographs beautifully. Simple outfits keep the focus where it should be—on your family and your connection with each other.
